For Those in Peril
Civil decorations and lifesaving awards
The stories behind civil medals and awards always reveal extraordinary courage. This book tells some of these stories, of men, women and even children who risk — and sometimes lose — their own lives in order to help 'those in peril'. The awards commemorate gallantry shown at sea and on land, in fire, earthquake and, perhaps inevitably in Wales, disasters in the coal mines. Alongside these stories the fascinating history of the British civil awards system emerges. Some awards were inspired by specific incidents, but perhaps more familiar will be the royal medals: the book includes ten Albert, five Edward and three George Medals. The book also forms a useful illustrated catalogue of one of our most fascinating, and poignant, collections.
