Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 & 4

Victorian Medicine

National Waterfront Museum

Join our character actor and find out about the grim ways the Victorian pit doctor treated the illnesses from blood-sucking leeches and broken bones to amputations without anaesthetic. Explore the themes of sickness and health in industry through objects and hands-on activities.

Combine your visit to see our new exhibition 'From Pithead to Sick Bed and Beyond'. Find out about the dangers of a miner’s life before the NHS and health and safety.

*Please note that while most pupils will enjoy the session, some of our more sensitive visitors may find the topic a little worrying. We are happy to talk through any concerns you may have.
