Keith Vaughan: The Sense of Touch

Keith Vaughan was largely a self-taught artist, although he worked as a layout artist for the advertising agency Lintas throughout much of the 1930s.

In the same period he was a keen photographer who used the new technology of the Leica to record his interests and relationships.

Using excerpts from Vaughan's manuscript journals in the Tate archive, Simon Pierse examines correspondences between image and text and explores the dichotomy of Vaughan's sensual yet inhibited character.

Simon Pierse is an artist and art historian based at Aberystwyth University where his research focuses on British post-war art. He first encountered the work of Vaughan whilst an art student at the Slade during the 1970s.
