EventFestival of Flora – Eat, Drink and Be Merry.

National Roman Legion Museum
5 May 2014 , 11am – 4pm.

Celebrate a Roman festival with us. Just like the Roman festival, Floralia, in Roman times, there will be eating, drinking, games to play, fighting to watch and contests to take part in – but we’ll leave out the animal sacrifice!

Flora was one of the oldest goddesses of Roman religion. She was a goddess of flowers, plants and fertility. Her festival was on the 27th or 28th May, but added to this was 6 days of games in her honour, apparently in one of the games under the Emperor Galba a tight-rope walking elephant appeared! The games would normally include gladiator fights, competitions and theatrical shows.
